Ozalj
OzaljThe city of Ozalj is situated in the northwestern part of the Karlovac county. With its area of 179.4 km2 and around 10,000 inhabitants, located along the middle flow of the Kupa river and its right-hand tributary Dobra, it is characterized by its interesting geographical differences. The southern spurs of the Žumberak mountains, the gentle hills in the wine area of Vivodina and Vrhovac, the wide and fertile Kupa valley, the hill Vodenica (537 m) and the Šljunčara lakes rich in fish attract with its beauty to this region. On a limestone, above the peaceful Kupa river, the Old Castle the symbol of Ozalj and the heart of its historical development was built. Inside its walls as well as in the city area one can see a lot of prehistoric, old Roman and medieval archeological finds. The first written record about the city dates from 1244. The owners of the castle were the most powerful aristocratic families: Babonic, Frankopan, Zrinski. In the 17th century goes Ozalj as an unofficial Croatian residence through its most glistening period. Viceroy Petar Zrinski has his residence here, and the literary-linguistic circle of Ozalj "rules" over the cultural life. With the tragic execution of Viceroy Petar Zrinski and Count Fran Krsto Frankopan in 1671 the blossom of the city was interrupted by force. In the 18th century, the major renovation of the castle was made by the new owners (Perlas and Batthyani) who gave the previously gothic castle its contemporary baroque form. By its value belongs the Old Castle Ozalj to the first monument category. A rich collection of the Home Museum is located there. Among other buildings the most important are the baroque parish church of St. Vid (first written record 1349) and the "Stone palace" of Munjara, the old power plant from 1908. Aside from Ozalj, Trg once a systematically built medieval village, Vivodina, castles and mansions in Jaškovo, Zorkovac, Grdun, Hrašće, Vrhovac (Plepelić-Palace), Trešćerovac and Gornje Pokupje are mentioned as ancient settlements. In this region a Pauline monastery in Svetice also played an important cultural and economical role. After being proclaimed a city in 1996 Ozalj builds its identity in connection with its historical-cultural heritage and traditional values, with the picturesque beauty of its preserved surroundings that welcomes every visitor.
