The position of the castle is extraordinary, unique. Il reminds one of those chivalries romantic nests built on the cliffs above European rivers in the time of Romanticism (the Rhine!) It has the position of a fairy-tale castle. Milan Kruhek wrote this in his book "Architectural Heritage of the Kupa River Valley in the Karlovac Region".
Of all the views in Ozalj, there is one particularly unforgettable: the Old Castle green with vegetation, reflected in the quiet glistening waters of the Kupa River. It was home to the Babonic, Frankopan and Zrinski families, three most powerful Croatian feudal dynasties. In its stone depths it preserves the engraved vestiges of its past masters. It maintains the memory of the genteel majesty and tragic glory of the Zrinskis and Frankopans, and the glorious years before the beheading of Petar Zrinski and Fran Krsto Frankopan in Wiener Neustadt in 1671.
"He who dies honorably shall live forever!"
Fran Krsto Frankopan wrote these prophetic words which would become their epitaph.
The castle was abandoned and plundered like the other holdings of the two decimated families. From the eighteenth century onwards, new owners, came to Ozalj one after the other, they added and altered the structure, so that in addition to older Gothic elements, it has assumed a distinctly Baroque character.
